The
Santa Maria Indians shut down the San Luis Obispo
Blues 7-1 on Tuesday night, upsetting the home
Blues in front of a record crowd of 3,500.
The Blues launched off Fireworks after the game,
but the fireworks on the field came from the Indians
dugout.
The
tribe used a big 5-run 3rd inning to overcome
a 1-0 deficit when 3B Kris Haycock led off with
a single up the middle. CF Chase Leavitt walked
and he was followed by 4 consecutive singles,
one by 2B Evan Wells, and then RBI singles by
SS Cory Morales, DH Zane Chavez, and LF Will Campbell.
1B Wes Dorrell also added an RBI single later
in the inning and the Indians jumped out to a
5-1 lead, stunning the big crowd.
2B
Evan Wells, 2-3 on the night, delivered a 6th
inning triple over the right fielder's head to
bring home Haycock and Leavitt to give the Indians
a commanding 7-1 lead.
The
Indians John Thomas took the hill, and as is becoming
customary this season, was unhittable. Besides
a 1st inning solo homerun to centerfield by 2B
Ryan Fisher (UC Irvine), Thomas gave up only 3
more hits through 8 strong innings while striking
out 8 and only walking 1. Cody Smith came on in
the ninth and shut the door on the Blues with
a 1-2-3 inning.
This
was the Indians 19th win on the year and 8th in
the CCL (19-12, 8-5 CCL).
