Indians give up 7 in the 7th, lose 9-5

Box Score

Mickey Jannis threw well again giving 5 quality innings for the Indians, but the bullpen for the second straight night, was unable to avoid the big inning. Again it was in the 7th inning, this time as the Oaks scored 7 runs off relievers Steve Martlaro and Joe Allison in Tuesday's game at Thousand Oaks.

Jannis left after 5 with a 3-0 lead, started early by SS Corey Morales RBI double in the second, scoring C Zane Chavez (2-3, 3 runs scored). In the 3rd, 3B Kris Haycock opened up the inning with a single up the middle. He would score on 1B Wes Dorrell's infield single and 2B Ryan Intlekoffer's throwing error to make it 2-0.

The newest Indian Cody Smith, son of pitching coach Bryn Smith, started in left field for the Indians and came up in the 4th in an RBI situation. Smith, who was released by the San Diego Padres (was at High-A Lake Elsinore), chopped a grounder to second to score a run giving the Indians a 3-0 lead. Smith will be with the Tribe for the next week or so and then will be headed to Class-A Modesto to pitch for the Colorado Rockies organization.

With runners in scoring position and one out Indians DH Jeremy Bamsey came up to face reliever Cody Clines, a deceptive lefty with a submarine style delivery. Bamsey fought off a few pitches before driving a fastball the other way between third and short for an RBI single and a 4-0 Indians lead.

Reliever Steve Martlaro came in for Jannis and got through the 6th inning unscathed. However, in the 7th ran into trouble, quickly finding himself with a bases loaded no out situation. The first 4 hitters reached on singles making it 4-1 and then Martlaro hit the next batter on the right leg, making it 4-2 and ending the righty's night. Manager Scott Nickason summoned for Arizona righty Joe Allison (making his second appearance for the Indians) and he was dealt a tough situation.

Allison walked the first batter and then gave up a single up the middle, and before you could blink it was a tie ballgame. A wild pitch and a single later, the Indians were down 7-4, unable to avoid the big inning for the second straight night.

The Tribe battled for a run in the 8th when C Zane Chavez opened with a double over the right fielder's head. Corey Morales (3-3, 2B, 2 singles, 2 RBI, SB) knocked him in again for his second RBI of the night, but the Oaks were able to manage two more runs to take a commanding 9-5 lead.

The Indians fall to 11-7 overall and 6-3 lead with a big league game Wednesday night against the undefeated Santa Barbara Foresters. The Indians John Thomas, local product and former minor leaguer will get the start tonight. In Thomas' last outing Thursday night against Santa Barbara he threw very well, giving up 3 runs over 7+ innings.
