Wichita,
KS - The Santa Maria Indians season ended Monday
after losing in 11 innings to the Seguin CMC Steelers
from Texas. The Indians finished their season
36-17 and made the Sweet 16 of the NBC World Series,
one of 2 CCL teams to make the final 16.
Indians
starter Cory Kahn (3-0, 2.90 era) threw 4 innings,
giving up 6 hits and three runs leaving the game
with the lead. RHP Josh Baas (2-2, 4.93 era) relieved
Kahn for 3 innings of 3-hit ball giving up one
run and preserving the lead for the Tribe.
The
Indians offense put up four runs in the second
inning on a Loren Storey (team-leading .366) bases-clearing
triple to give the Indians a 3-1 lead. Storey
would come up limp rounding second base with an
apparent hamstring injury, but would remain in
the game to score on 1B Bo Bowman's (.357) RBI
sac fly to right field to put the Tribe up 4-1.
Storey would be replaced in left field by Tommy
Horning following the second inning.
An
Evan Wells (.343) leadoff single in the 4th inning
would spark another Indians rally as Bo Bowman
doubled home Wells on a hit and run, Bowman's
second RBI of the game and team-leading 41st RBI
on the season. The Indians would take a 5-2 lead
going into the bottom of the fourth until the
Steelers rallied back to 5-4 coming into the 9th
inning. With LHP Derrick Saito (2-0, 4.19 era)
on the mound in the ninth, Steelers CF Chris Pacheco
hit a 2-out single and stole second base. The
next batter, SS Cass Dresch poked a single up
the middle to tie the game at 5-5 and send the
game to extras.
The
Indians couldn't put together any runs in the
top halves of the 10th and 11th innings before
the Steelers struck against closer Jordan Stewart
(working his third game of the World Series) in
the bottom half of the 11th. A one out walk to
pinch-hitter Robert Blankenship and a sacrifice
bunt left him at second with two outs and SS Cass
Dresch up again with the game on the line. Dresch
took the first pitch from Stewart and drilled
it through the right side to score Blankenship
and end the Indians 2006 national title chances
and stellar 36-17 season.
The
Indians can't be disappointed with their season,
finishing in second place in the highly competitive
California Collegiate League and among the top
16 teams in the nation at the NBC World Series.
The
Santa Maria staff would also like to thank all
members of the 2006 Indians for making this one
of the most successful seasons in recent history.
