Indians give up 2 in the ninth, drop heartbreaker to Studs 3-2

Box Score

Wichita, KS - The Santa Maria Indians lost to the Seattle Studs (winners of the Pacific International League) on Tuesday night 3-2. The Studs got on the board first with an RBI single by Ryan Raagas in the 2nd inning. That would be the only run Indians pitcher Manny Hernandez would give up as he went 6 innings giving up 6 hits and only one run. In the top of the 8th inning, the Indians put up two runs.

A leadoff walk to CF Daniel Robertson and a base-hit by LF Loren Storey set up runners on the corners and no out for 1B Bo Bowman. Bowman launched a deep fly ball to the left field warning track that LF Nate Baker couldn't handle. Robertson came around to score, however as Bowman rounded first he passed Storey, ruling him out and sending Storey back to first, killing a potential rally that would have broken open the game.

Pinch hitter Willie Keene's grounder to shortstop scored Matt Winkelman as SS Raagas threw the ball away, giving the Indians the lead 2-1. In the bottom of the ninth, RHP Arturo Reyes who had relieved Hernandez for 2 shutout innings got the first batter out before walking Raagas.

Manager Scott Nickason made the call to the pen opting for the righty Jordan Stewart to face the 8th and 9th hitters (both right-handed). Stewart plunked the first batter he faced and then induced a groundout to bring up the switch-hitting leadoff hitter Andre Marshall (3-4 coming into the at-bat). Pitching coach Bryn Smith opted for the intentional walk to load the bases for Nate Baker. Baker hit a chopper to SS Aaron McGuinness who threw high to 2B Evan Wells at second, dropping the ball and keeping the Studs' hopes alive as they tied the game at 2-2. Stewart worked the count to 0-2 to Shawn Lindsey before he drove the ball up the middle to give Seattle the walk-off victory 3-2.
