Indians finish second in Santa Barbara to eventual BOTW Champ

Foresters 11, Indians 4

The Indians dropped tonight's 4:00 contest between the bracket's only other undefeated team, the Santa Barbara Foresters at Caeser Uyesaka stadium on the UC Santa Barbara campus 11-4. The Foresters bats awoke as they put up 7 runs in the first four innings, four off of Indians starter Joey Rosas. Rosas, a southpaw from Yavapai College, only lasted 2 innings, giving up 4 hits, 4 earned runs, and walking 2 while stirking out 3. Righthander Tyler Backus relieved his college teammate Rosas in the 3rd inning, going 3 innings giving up 3 runs on 2 hits. TJ Statsny pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits.

The Forester's Pete Clifford went 2-4 with 3 RBI and SS Hector Estrella and 3B Connar Gillespie added 2 RBI's for the 16-5 Foresters.

Centerfielder Daniel Robertson was 3-5 with 2 runs and a stolen base and 1B Bo Bowman went 1-4 with 3 RBI for the Tribe. 2B Evan Wells went 3-4 with an RBI and runs scored.

If the Foresters beat the DJM Stars as is expected on Saturday, they will clinch the Santa Barbara bracket and play the winner from the Santa Clara bracket on Sunday at Sunken Diamond on the Stanford campus. The Indians play the Paso Reds at 9:00 tomorrow morning and need the Stars to upset the Foresters (and shut them out) in order to make it to Palo Alto.

Indians 19, Angels 2

The Indians pounded out 19 runs against the San Francisco Angels Friday morning to take the first two games of the Best of the West Tourney. The Indians had 19 hits on the day sending 46 men to the plate in the beating. CF Daniel Robertson continued his torrid summer, going 5-5 with 5 runs scored, 4 RBI, 2 doubles, 2 triples, and a stolen base. LF Tommy Horning went 4-5 with 4 runs and 3 RBI and 3B Willie Keene went 2-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Several members of the tribe had RBI's today with RF Loren Storey adding 2 RBI's, RF Jimmy Mittleberger 3 RBI's, and 1B Bo Bowman, SS Aaron McGuinness , SS Evan Wells all adding RBI's as well. 3B Matt Winkelman replaced Keene in the 5th inning and went 2-3 with 2 doubles.

Starter Josh Baas went 4 innings for the win giving up the only 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 stirkeouts.Jake Kougl came on to throw 4 scoreless innings of 3-hit ball and reliever Ryan DeLorge shut out the Angels with a scoreless ninth.

Indians 5, DJM Stars 0

The Santa Maria Indians opened the 2006 Best of the West Tournament by beating the DJM Stars 5-0 on Thursday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium on the UC Santa Barbara campus. The Indians Cal State Los Angeles duo of Manny Hernandez and Arturo Reyes combined on a shutout of the Stars. Hernandez started the game and got the win, going 5 innings, allowing 5 hits, and striking out 5. Reyes came on in the 6th and threw 4 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits, striking out 4 and earned the save. Neither Reyes or Hernandez allowed a walk to the Stars today.

The Indians Loren Storey (Fresno State) went 3-4 with 2 runs scored, 2 runs batted in, and 2 stolen bases. 1B Bo Bowman (UL-Monroe) added an RBI and a stolen base as well and went 2-4 at the plate. The Indians record now stands at 13-5 overall.

The Indians play the San Francisco Angels tomorrow morning at 9:00 and then play the home favorite Santa Barbara Foresters at 4:00. All games will be played at UCSB along with Saturday's morning contest with the Paso Reds. The winner of this bracket will advance to play the winner of the Santa Clara bracket at Stanford on Sunday at 12:30.
