Indians
induct inaugural Hall of Fame Class

C.J. Scoop Nunes
The Santa Maria Indians Baseball Club held their
annual "Scoop Nunes Hot Stove Hall of Fame"
auction and dinner banquet on Saturday, January
21, 2006 at the Santa Maria Elks Lodge #1538.
The Indians unveiled their inaugural "Santa
Maria Indians Hall of Fame" class of 2006.

Mayor Larry Lavagnino was on hand to accept the
"Founder's Plaque" on behalf of his
father, who along with 8 other Board of Directors
founded the Indians in 1943. Former major leaguers
Robin Ventura and 2006 Indians coach Bryn Smith
were also on hand to support the Indians and their
Hall of Fame inductees, helping raise money for
the 2006 Indians season.
Indians CEO Kevin Haughian was very thankful
for all the contributions on the night, "With
the team our coaching staff has put together I'm
very hopeful that the Indians will earn a trip
to the acclaimed National Baseball Congress (NBC)
Tournament in Wichita this summer. Because this
would be a very expensive proposition, probably
in the neighborhood of $30,000, the support we
received at the banquet from both local businesses
and individuals was very much appreciated."
The Indians auctioned off signed memorabilia
(Harmon Killebrew, Mike Scioscia, Bryn Smith),
ticket packages (SF Giants, Oakland A's, LA Angels,
LA Dodgers), barbeques, and vacations. The auction
was peformed by master auctioneer Jim Glines,
however the most memorable part of the night was
when Kevin Gatewood, the son of inductee Don Gatewood,
accepted the award on behalf of his ailing father
back in Hawaii. Kevin's speech was followed by
a short video clip with Don and his family recalling
some of his fondest memories playing with the
Indians and his fellow Hall of Fame inductees.
The Indians would like to thank everyone who
helped make the night a success, especially all
the community members that came out and the Santa
Maria Elks Lodge for hosting the event and providing
a great dinner.
