5 Indians drafted in 2007

(June 7, 2007) - The Santa Maria Indians had five former players drafted in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft.

2007 Santa Maria Indians

RHP Josh Walter - Texas State

47th Round - Chicago Cubs

The 6'5, 250 pound junior from Texas State was selected in the 47th round of the 2007 draft by the Chicago Cubs. Walter decided to play for the Indians in the 2007 summer and went 2-1 with a 2.84 era. He had 25 strikeouts and only 9 walks with 3 saves, and was named to the 2007 California Collegiate League All-League team. Walter consistently threw in the mid-90's and did not allow an earned run until the final game of the 2007 regular season against the Santa Barbara Foresters.

Walter returned to Texas State in 2008 as a senior and should hear his name called again in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft.

2006 Santa Maria Indians

1B Bo Bowman - University of Louisiana Monroe

22nd Round - Colorado Rockies

The 6'2 200 pound slugging first basemen from Gering, Nebraska was chosen in the 22nd round of the draft to the Colorado Rockies and signed shortly after the draft. He will be reunited with Santa Maria Indians owner Kevin Haughian (Casper Rockies owner) in the Pioneer League in Wyoming. Bowman batted .335 with 9 homeruns, 46 RBI, and a team leading 26 doubles in 2007 for the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.

In Santa Maria during the 2006 season Bowman was one of the big power hitters for the 37-16 Indians that finished 13th in the nation at the NBC World Series. He topped the Indians with a .377 batting average and 47 RBI.

LHP Joey Rosas - Yavapai College

43rd Round - Texas Rangers

Rosas, a member of the 2006 Santa Maria Indians was selected for the second straight year, this time in the 43rd round by the Texas Rangers. A lefty from Arizona, Rosas was selected in the 9th round by the Washington Nationals following his freshman season at Yavapai Junior College in Arizona. Rosas declined the offer and pitched for the Indians in 2006.

Rosas went back to Yavapai for his sophomore season and was selected by the Texas Rangers. He declined again, having signed a scholarship to play for the University of Tennesse, where he is playing in the 2008 season.

2005 Santa Maria Indians

RHP Andre Lamontagne - Long Beach State

32nd Round - Chicago White Sox

RHP Andre Lamontagne, a member of the 2005 Santa Maria Indians was selected for the second time in 2007, this time in the 32nd round by the Chicago White Sox. Lamontagne played with Tribe after graduating from Righetti High School in 2005. He went on to Long Beach State in the fall of 2005 after being drafted by the Reds in the 45th round (05). Lamontagne played in the Alaska League for two summer and was used as a reliever for Long Beach State this past spring. In his two seasons at Long Beach, Lamontagne went 1-0 with a 4.46 era.

Lamontage was selected by the Cincinatti Reds in the 45th round following his senior season but opted to go to Long Beach State. He declined the selection in 2007 and transferred to Oral Roberts University for the 2008 season.

3B Erik Morrison - University of Kansas

49th Round - Pittsburgh Pirates

Morrison, a member of the 2005 Santa Maria Indians was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 49th round in 2007. A third basemen from Arroyo Grande, Morrison returned to the University of Kansas for his senior season in 2008.
