Coaching Staff

Head Coach

Bobby Brown

Bobby Brown will serve as the Santa Maria Indians head coach in 2008, his first season with the Indians. A former professional baseball player with the Kansas City Royals, Brown played 10 years of professional baseball.

Brown hails from the Central Coast, having graduated in 1990 from San Luis Obispo High School where he won a CIF Championship. After high school Brown played collegiately for Cuesta College for two seasons where he was named All-Conference and All-State. Following his sophomore season at Cuesta College Brown won an NBC World Series title with the Kenai (AK) Oilers of the Alaska League.

After the 1994 summer Brown signed to play for the University of Oklahoma Sooners. In his first season as a junior in 1995, Brown's Sooner team went to the College World Series and he led his team with a .362 batting average and was named All-Conference (Big 8). In his senior season Brown once again led his team in hitting with a .384 batting average and was named All-Conference and All-Midwest Region.

In 1997 he signed with the Kansas City Royals and played single A ball for Spokane. Following his time with the Royals Brown played professionaly in the Northern League, the Frontier League, the Canadien League, and the Golden League. He also played professionally in the Taiwan Major Leagues. Brown holds a lifetime .301 career batting average and 927 career hits.

His most recent coaching experience was serving as the assistant coach for Chris Steven's Hancock College Bulldogs in Santa Maria. He was with Hancock for three seasons, from 2005-2007. He currently is instructing at a hitting facility "Swing City" in Keller, Texas under former major league 3B Luis Ortiz.

Coach Brown has been married to wife Amy for 4 years and they.currently reside in North Richland Hills, Texas.

 

Assistant Coach

Ryan Ruiz

Ryan Ruiz enters his first season with the Santa Maria Indians and is currently in his first full year as assistant coach for Central Arizona Baseball. At Central Arizona Ruiz is in charge of the hitters, outfielders, strength and conditioning, and recruiting. Central Arizona College enetered the 2008 season as the top ranked junior college program in the nation.

Ruiz spent the last eight years playing professional baseball in the highly competitive Northern and American Association of the Independent leagues, playing for the St. Paul Saints for four seasons. Ruiz also played for the Sioux City Explorers (Iowa) and finished playing professional baseball in 2006. His career batting average was .288

Ruiz played college ball at Texas Tech University from 1998-99 and led his team to the NCAA tournament both seasons. His senior season he led the team in batting with a .363 batting average and 35 stolen bases. His junior season he also led his team with a .388 batting average. Both seasons at Texas Tech he was named second team All-Conference (Big 12) as well as being nominated for the 1999 Easton Defensive Player of the Year award. Before Texas Tech, Ruiz played at Saddleback College and was a two time All-Conference member.

Coach Ruiz holds an AA degree from Saddleback College and a Bachelor of Arts from Texas Tech University in Sports Psychology. Coach Ruiz is a native of Lake Forest, CA and is married to Carissa Cooper of Moville, IA. They currently reside in Phoenix, AZ.

 

Assistant Coach

Scott Domingues, Cal Poly SLO

Scott will be joining head coach Bobby Brown's staff in 2008, his first season of coaching. Domingues has served as a backup infielder for the division one Cal Poly Mustangs in 2008, his senior season. Coach Brown calls Domingues "one of the smartest players I have ever coached" and feels that he has a career ahead of him in coaching once he hangs his cleats up from Cal Poly.

Domingues played for coach Brown in 2005 and 2006 at Hancock College in Santa Maria. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in Santa Maria in 2004 and, playing alongside 2007 and 2008 SM Indians Josh Meagher, led his team to a 2002 CIF State Championship. Domingues transferred to Cal Poly for his junior season in 2007 and played in 10 games with a .333 batting average. This season he has played sparingly backing up middle infielders Kyle Smith and 2005 Indian Pat Pezet at Cal Poly.

Domingues will serve as an assistant working with the infielders and hitting.

 

Assistant Coach

Brian Zepeda, Hancock College

Brian Zepeda will assist the Santa Maria Indians periodically throughout the season. Brian is currently an assistant coach at Hancock College under head coach Chris Stevens. He also coaches with former Santa Maria Indian (2005) Cesar Reyes and current Indian (2008) David Mittleberger. His brother Jesse is an assistant coach at Cal Poly under head coach Larry Lee.

Kevin Haughian

Haughian, a native of Berkeley, CA., is a graduate of Cal State Hayward and holds a Masters Degree in Public Relations from Boston University. He is currently the owner of the Casper Ghosts, a rookie league affiliate of the Colorado Rockies as well as the Santa Maria Indians.

He began his baseball career with the Salinas Spurs of the California League in 1983 and at the age of 24 became the youngest General Manager in professional baseball. He remained in that position through the 1985 season.

After serving as a legislative assistant to a California State Assemblyman through 1990, Haughian returned to operate the Spurs in 1991, where he doubled the Spurs’ attendance from the previous year. Taking over the reigns of the Palm Springs Angels following the 1991 season, he orchestrated the two most successful years in franchise history. The Palm Spring club increased its attendance 40 percent in 1992 by drawing more than 92,000 and then drew an impressive 105,000 in 1993.

Following the 1993 season, Haughian managed the club’s relocation to Lake Elsinore, CA., and building of The Diamond at Lake Elsinore, repeatedly ranked by Baseball America as one of the finest stadiums in all of Minor League Baseball

In 1994, the Lake Elsinore Storm’s inaugural season, the team set a league attendance record of 357,123 for a first year franchise. In 1995, the Storm hosted the largest crowd to ever view a California League All-Star Game. By the end of his tenure in Lake Elsinore, the team also held the record for largest single-game attendance (7/4/98-12,876), had an average yearly attendance in excess of 330,000 and hosted the eight largest crowds in California League history.Haughian has been nominated on three occasions for the National Association of Professional Baseball League’s (NAPBL) prestigious Larry McPhail Promotional Trophy and has received both "Awards of Excellence" and "Executive of the Year" honors from the California League. In January 2000, Haughian became the first non-player to be inducted into the Lake Elsinore Storm Hall of Fame.

Haughian is most proud of the fact that over 20 former staff members from his franchises now hold executive positions at all levels of Minor League Baseball and in Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, the NBA, the NFL and the NHL.

Kevin, his wife Kathy, and their daughter Sydney, who will turn five this June, reside in San Luis Obispo.

 

General Manager of Ball Park Operations

Brent Mosbacher

Brent joins the Indians in 2008 for his first season in Santa Maria as the Director of Ballpark Operations. Brent is a senior Recreation Administration major at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with an emphasis in Special Event Planning.

Brent will be responsible for the fundraising dinner, special event nights, promotional nights, and camp clinics for 2008. He brings alot of Special Event experience to the Indians, having worked in the catering business as well as planned several special events in the San Luis Obispo area. His expertise should boost the special event nights at Elks Field in 2008.

Brent will be graduating in 2009 from Cal Poly after having grown up in Placerville, California about 50 miles north of Sacramento. Brent is a recreational basketball, softball, and football player who played basketball in high school. He has been around the game of baseball his whole life and would like to work in Special Events for a professional sports organization.

 

Director of Special Events/ Ballpark Operations

Nicole Killian

Nicole will be joining the Indians in 2008 for her first season in Santa Maria as the Director of Special Events and Ballpark Operations. Nicole is a senior Business Administration major with an emphasis in Marketing. She is also minoring in Special Events within the Recreation Administration field.

Nicole will be responsible for the fundraising dinner in July, special event nights at Elks Field, and camp clinics for 2008. She previously interned for the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer in marketing and special events in 2007. She was also the special event coordinator for the non-profit Wheelchair Foundation in San Luis Obispo in 2008.

Nicole will be graduating in the fall of 2008 after having grown up in Mount Olive, New Jersey about 40 minutes west of New York City. Nicole played softball her entire life and danced in high school. Nicole would like to work in special events for a professional sports ogranization or get a law degree in sports administration. Nicole is an avid New York Yankees fan.

 

Director of Baseball Operations

Ricky Brown

Ricky joins the Indians for his first season in 2008 as the Director of Baseball Operations. He will be in charge of handling all matters with the players, coaching staff, scheduling, equipment, transportation, and stat keeping.

Ricky is currently studying at Cuesta College where he hopes to transfer to the Recreation Administration department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He played baseball at Templeton High School and played one summer for the now disbanded Santa Maria Stars. A native of Templeton who was originally born in Clovis, Ricky will be a big asset to the Indians for his past experience having played baseball.

 

Director of Group Nights/ On-Field Promotions

Tina Vincent

Tina joins the Indians in 2008 for her first season as Director of Group Nights and On-Field Promotions. She will be responsible for organizing group nights at the ballpark for local youth little leagues and organizations in Santa Maria. She will also be in charge of coordinating all on-field promotions in between innings.

Currently attending Saint Mary’s College of CA, Tina is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sports Management and a minor in Business Administration and will graduate in spring 2009.

Tina graduated from Righetti High School in 2005 with honors, and she participated in varsity soccer, track, and cross country in addition to playing club soccer.

Tina’s experience includes coaching soccer, volleyball, and flag football for Orinda Intermediate School. She also teaches a tot soccer class while performing administrative duties for the Orinda Community Center. She just completed an internship at Acalanes HS in their athletic department. Additionally, Tina is in her third year working at the Santa Maria YMCA as a youth counselor.

Upon completion of her degree at St. Mary’s, Tina plans to attend graduate school pursuing a teaching credential and an MBA. She hopes to work with children in a sports setting.

 

Tickets/ Groundskeeping

Eddie Garcia

Eddie has been an Indian longer than any current staff member for over 20 years. He worked with Scoop Nunes for over 15 years and currently is in charge of ticket sales and groundskeeping for the Indians. A native of Santa Maria he is married to wife Chrysann and has three children, including two sons Devin and Trevor who are seen at Elks Field every summer as Indians shaggers.

Eddie currently works for the city of Santa Maria and in 2007 was inducted into the Santa Maria Indians Hall of Fame for all his hard work and dedication to the Indians all these years. He also coaches youth baseball in Santa Maria.

 

Groundskeeping

Roy Daniel

Roy has been with the Indians since after the 2006 season. He currently works with Eddie Garcia in field preparations on Elks Field and is a vital member of maintaining Elks Field in great playing condition. Roy works year round on maintaining Elks and can be seen at every Indians game sitting along the first base sideline. Roy currently lives in Santa Maria with his wife.
