Indians sign two local players for 2008 season

March 17 - New Santa Maria Indians head coach Bobby Brown made his first moves as head coach Sunday by announcing the signing of three players for the Santa Maria Indians roster. The Indians are making an attempt to return to the old philosophy of bringing in as many local players this summer. Brown announced that two former Santa Maria natives, former Hancock Bulldogs Jimmy Dodos and Jimmy Mittleberger will be coming home to play for the Big Red in 2008.

Dodos is currently the leadoff hitter and starting center fielder for the Chico State Wildcats, one of the top division two programs in the country. A junior this season, he is currently batting .338 with 10 RBI and 10 stolen bases through 18 games. Dodos played two seasons at Hancock College and was named first team all Western State Conference both seasons. In his sophomore season Dodos knocked in 32 runs in 43 games, and left Hancock having stolen 25 bases in his career.

Dodos was a graduate of Righetti High School in 2005 where he earned First Team All-State and County Most Valuable Player. Dodos played for Indians head coach Bobby Brown at Hancock for two seasons and last summer for Indians assistant coach Marc Smith on the Paso Reds. Dodos will be used primarily as a centerfielder and pitcher for the Indians.

Jimmy Mittleberger, a member of the 2006 Santa Maria Indians will be coming home to Santa Maria for his second summer with the Tribe. A graduate of Righetti High School in 2004 Mittleberger played two seasons for Hancock College. His sophomore season in 2006, Mittleberger was named 1st-Team All Western State Conference after hitting .343 with 21 doubles, 4 home runs, and 39 RBI.

Mittleberger currently plays for the Concordia University Eagles in Irvine, an NAIA baseball program. He played for the 2006 Santa Maria Indians following his sophomore season at Hancock and was primarily a right fielder. The junior attended Chico State in 2007 but did not play baseball. He played the 2007 summer for the Clarinda A’s in Iowa and transferred to Concordia for this season.

The Indians also announced the signing of right handed pitcher Drew Dowl from Chico State University. Dowl, a 6-4 235 pound junior from Moorpark transferred to Chico from Moorpark Community College. He has made four relief appearances on the season and holds a 5.40 era.
