2007 Season Review

The Indians finished the 2007 season with an overall record of 40-17 and a second place finish in the California Collegiate League. The Tribe went 1-2 in the NBC World Series ending the 2007 season. For the second straight year they won the NBC Central Coast State Tournament.

2007 Roster - Current Status

C Zane Chavez, Indiana State University (transferred from Palomar CC), 2007 College Stats - Chavez finished the 2007 summer with a .304 batting average and will play for Indiana State in 2008. The former 19th round (2005) pick of the Kansas City Royals had a good sophomore season at Palomar and should be drafted again as a junior in 2008.
C Jeff Farnham, New Mexico State University (transferred from Hancock College), 2007 College Stats - Farnham finished the 2007 summer with a .275 batting average after being named to the Western State Conference All-League team at Hancock College in 2007. He has signed to play division one ball for the New Mexico State Aggies and is one of five catchers vying for the starting spot in 2008.
C Josh Thomas, Cal Poly SLO, 2007 College Stats - In 2007 Thomas split time behind the plate for Cal Poly SLO with 2007 Indian Wes Dorrell. He played the 2007 summer with the Maxim Yankees before joining the Indians in late August and accompanying the team to the NBC World Series. He will return for his senior season at Cal Poly SLO in 2008
C Ryan Overland , Fresno State University, 2007 College Stats - Overland, the Atascadero native, joined the Indians late in the season, and went 2-3 with 3 RBI in his second game. He traveled with the team to Wichita, but saw limited action. He will return to Fresno State for his senior season in 2008.
C Derek McLeod, Cuesta College, 2007 Redshirt - McLeod saw limited action in 2007 as a backup catcher and DH and will return to Cuesta for his sophomore season after battling arm problems.

1B Jeremy Bamsey , Point Loma Nazarene, 2007 Redshirt - Bamsey, the 2006 California JC Leading hitter at Chaffey College played the majority at first base for the Indians in 2007. He batted .297 with 4 HR after redshirting in 2007 for Point Loma Nazarene. He returns for his junior season in 2008.
1B Wes Dorrell , Cal Poly SLO, 2007 College Stats - Dorrell came to the Indians after a great freshman season for Cal Poly in which he batted .303 with 6 HR en route to a selection on the 2007 Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American Team. He came to the Indians in mid-June and batted .264 with 2 HR, however did not accompany the team to Wichita due to summer school classes. He plans to return to Cal Poly as a sophomore, and if he keeps up the pace should hear his named called early in the 2009 draft.
1B Josh Meagher, Chico State University, 2007 redshirt - Meagher the Santa Maria native came to the Indians in 2007 and in his first two at bats collected 6 RBI (grand slam, double). He hit .264 with 2 HR and will return to Chico State for his junior season in 2008
2B Evan Wells, Gonzaga University, 2007 College Stats - Wells returned to the Indians in 2007 for his second summer. He started all but 3 games for the Indians and batted .284 with 15 stolen bases. He will return to Gonzaga as a junior and figures to be the starting 2B in 2008 with hopes of being drafted.
2B Matt Angel , Bossier Parrish Community College, 2007 Redshirt - Angel came out to Santa Maria for the 2007 summer and only got 59 at bats. With not much opportunity to settle into the lineup Angel batted .254. He will return to Bossier Parrish CC for his sophomore season.
3B Blake Crosby, Sacramento State University, 2007 College Stats - Crosby came to the Indians after his sophomore season at Sac State and batted a second best .364 with 37 RBI. He was named to the 2007 All-CCL team and the Baseball America Top 10 Prospects from the CCL in the summer of 2007. He will return to Sac State as the starting 3B in his junior season in 2008.
3B JJ Jelmini , Stanford University, 2007 College Stats - Jelmini came to the Indians at the end of the season for the NBC World Series as an extra bat. Like many Indians who travelled to Wichita, he only got one at bat for the Indians. He played the 2007 summer for the Clovis Outlaws of the CCL. He will return to Stanford as a junior in 2008.
3B Kris Haycock , Sonoma State (transferred from Fresno CC), 2007 College Stats - Haycock came to the Indians after his sophomore season at Fresno City College and batted .286 with 24 RBI in the 2007 summer. After the season he transferred to Sonoma State University.
SS Cory Morales, Northern Colorado University (transferred from Rio Hondo CC), 2007 College Stats - Morales returned to the Indians for his second summer in 2007 and was third on the team with a .310 batting average and led the team with 44 RBI. He will return to Northern Colorado in 2008 as the starting shortstop in his senior season after being named to the 2007 All-CCL Team.
INF Wes Borba, Merced College , 2007 College Stats - Borba came to the Indians along with Jelmini from the Outlaws for the NBC World Series, and like Jelmini only got one at bat in the final game of the tournament. He will be returning to Merced College for his junior season in 2008.

OF Will Campbell , Oregon State University (transferred from Cochise College), 2007 College Stats - Campbell came to the Indians in 2007 after being named to the ACCAC Conference Team and leading his team and conference in many categories, including over 40 stolen bases in 2007. He batted .290 and tied for the team lead with 6 HR. He also stole the most bases for the Indians with 32. After completing his two seasons at Cochise, he transferred to Oregon State for his junior season.
OF Kyle Gerhart, New Mexico Highlands, 2007 College Stats - Gerhart came to the Tribe in 2007 after being named an All-American at New Mexico Highlands. The right fielder batted .267 with 3 HR and will return to New Mexico Highlands in 2008 for his senior season.
OF Ben Caple, Indiana State University (transferred from Palomar CC), 2007 College Stats - Caple came to the Indians after an injury shortened 2007 season at Palomar and batted .292 with 11 RBI. He also saw limited action in the outfield from manager Scott Nickason only receiving 72 at bats. He heads to Indiana State with Zane Chavez for his junior season in 2008.
OF Tyrese McDaniel, Sonoma State (transferred from Fresno CC), 2007 College Stats - McDaniel returned to the Indians for his second summer in 2007 and tied for the team lead with 6 homeruns. He was not drafted as a junior from Sonoma State and will return for his senior season after being named the 2007 Conference Newcomer of the Year.
OF Chase Leavitt, University of Arkansas (transferred from CC Southern Nevada) - Leavitt came to the Indians mid season from CC Southern Nevada after being ranked on the Baseball America Nevada Prospect Watch List. He led the team in batting average with a .374 and 5 triples and a perfect 9-9 in stolen bases. He was named to the Baseball America Top 10 Prospects from the CCL List and was also on the 2007 All-CCL team. He had a scholarship to the University of Arkansas and should compete for a starting outfield spot in his junior year in 2008.

RHP Joe Allison , University of Arizona, 2007 College Stats - Allison came to the Indians mid-season after his freshman season at the University of Arizona. Allison only recorded 7 appearances on the summer and will return to Arizona in 2008 as a redshirt freshman.
RHP Mickey Jannis, Hancock College , 2007 College Stats - Jannis came to the Indians in 2007 after completing his freshman season at Cosumnes River College. He started 6 games for a 5.33 era. He is transferring to Hancock College for his sophomore season in 2008.
RHP Steve Martlaro, USC , 2007 College Stats - Martlaro came to the Indians after his junior season at USC. In 17 appearances he was 3-1 with a 5.40 era. He will return to USC in 2008 with hopes of playing in his senior season.
RHP Brendan McDonald, Southern Arkansas (transferred from Cochise College), 2007 College Stats - McDonald came to the Indians in 2007 after completing his two years at Cochise College. He had 13 appearances for a 4.65 era in the summer. After the summer, he was planning on transferring to D-II Southern Arkansas University.
RHP Nate Smith , USC , 2007 College Stats - Smith came to the Indians in 2007 after finishing his junior season and completing his degree at USC. He was one of the Indians better pitchers, earning All-CCL honors after going 7-0 with a 2.47 era. After the summer, he was planning on attending Fresno State to finish his graduate studies and play for the Bulldogs in 2008, his senior season.
RHP Micah Spencer, Indiana State University , 2007 College Stats - Spencer came to the Indians from Modesto Junior College, where he was named a JC All-American in 2006. Spencer was 2-3 in 15 appearances for the Indians. He signed to play for Indiana State University in 2008.
RHP Holden Sprague , Fresno State University, 2007 College Stats - Sprague came to the Indians after spending his sophomore year at Fresno State as one of the key relievers on the staff. Sprague was one of the Indians best pitchers in 2007, going 2-3 with a 3.13 era and will return to Fresno State as a junior in 2008 as either a starter or reliever with hopes of being drafted.
LHP TJ Statsny, Mesa State University, 2007 College Stats, - Statsny returned to the Indians in 2007 for his second summer in Santa Maria after completing his second season at Yavapai College. After the 2007 summer he transferred to Mesa State University.
RHP Diego Soto , Emporia State University (transferred from Cochise College), 2007 College Stats - Soto came to the Indians after completing his two seasons at Cochise College. He was 4-3 with a 3.81 era in 9 starts for the Indians and was planning on transferring to Emporia State University (Kansas) for his junior season in 2008, although he may be redshirting in 2008.
LHP Kris Tomlinson, Fresno State University, 2007 College Stats - Tomlinson came to the Indians after his sophomore season at Fresno State after limited use in 2007. He pitched in 6 games posting a 3.86 era before injuring his hamstring and taking the rest of the summer off. He will return to Fresno State in 2008 as one of the lefties out of the bullpen.
LHP Cody Walden , Armstrong Atlantic University (transferred from Cochise College), 2007 College Stats - Walden came to the Indians after completing his sophomore season at Cochise College as a second team All-Conference member. Walden was one of the most consistent pitchers for the Indians, going 4-0 with a 2.28era. The 5-9 lefty transferred to Armstrong Atlantic University for his junior season in 2008.
RHP , Josh Walter, Texas State University, 2007 College Stats - Walter came to the Indians midway through the summer after finishing his junior season at Texas State by being chosen in the 47th round by the Chicago Cubs in 2007. He opted not to sign and came to play for the Indians, earning All-CCL honors going 2-1 with a 2.84 era and not allowing an earned run until the final game of the season. He will return to Texas State as a senior and should be the closer in 2008.
LHP John Thomas , Santa Maria - Thomas, the former 2nd round pick of the San Francisco Giants in 1999 played for the Indians in 2007 as he returned home after a 7-year minor league career. He made it all the way up to AAA Rochester with the Minnesota Twins but retired and chose to pitch for the Tribe this past summer, earning 2007 CCL Most Outstanding Pitcher of the Year Award. He was clearly the Indians most dominating pitcher, going 7-1 with a 1.89 era and drew attention from scouts from the Giants and the Cardinals.
RHP Cody Smith, Santa Maria - Smith also joined the Indians after wrapping his minor league career with the San Diego Padres in 2007. He made it up to AA Wichita with the Kansas City Royals in 2006 and played left field for the Indians and also pitched. He batted .217 in 16 starts and posted a 3-1 record and 1.85 era on the mound.
